013 Wes Sam-Bruce: On Growing and Flexing our Cultural Empathy Muscle

LIKE YOU, AND EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD, I'M A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS.

I'M AN ARTIST, EDUCATOR, ILLUSTRATOR, MURALIST, PHOTOGRAPHER, DESIGNER, WRITER, AND POET

I'M BEST KNOWN FOR MY AUDACIOUS, EXPLORATORY, AND STORY-SOAKED SCULPTURAL INSTALLATIONS. LIKE ENTERING AN UNDISCOVERED WORLD, ABANDONED HOME, OR ONE'S OWN INNER LIFE, THESE INSTALLATIONS ACT AS LIVING METAPHORS TO PROMPT PHYSICAL ENGAGEMENT AND CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT WITH THE VIEWER, CONJURE STRONG EMOTIONAL CONNECTIONS, INSPIRE DEEP REFLECTION, OFFER INSIGHT INTO THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE, AND ENCHANT AUTHENTIC AND IMAGINATIVE PLAY IN BOTH ADULTS AND CHILDREN.THAT SAME TENACIOUS, AMBITIOUS, THOUGHT PROVOKING INTENTION ALSO MAKES ITS WAY INTO EVERY PIECE, BRUSH STROKE, WORD, AND IDEA I PUT IN A GALLERY, MURAL, ILLUSTRATION, POEM, OR PHOTO.RANGING FROM VAST VILLAGE-LIKE INSTALLATIONS IN MUSEUMS AND POETICALLY CHARGED 2D AND 2.5D WORK IN GALLERIES, TO THE SMALL ACT OF MAKING A POEM OR PHOTO ALONE AT THE RIVER, MY WORK INVESTIGATES THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE, MYSTERY, CONNECTIONS TO LANGUAGE, LANDSCAPE & PLACE, THE UNFATHOMABLE DEPTH OF OUR OWN INNER-LIVES, AND THE THREADED-NESS OF ONE THING TO EVERYTHING ELSE.  MY WORK HAS MANY MEDIUMS; THE IDEAS TAKING THEIR FINAL FORMS TO FILL IN THE OPEN SPACE OF A GALLERY WALL, INSTALLATION, OR POEM LIKE WATER SEEKING ITS LEVEL.
